Patty’s Tip of the Month: The Right Way to Wash Your Face
Work water cooler convo’s are the best, right? Talking about politics, or about the most recent football game, or at Seaside Aesthetics, just chatting about the correct way to wash your face at night. During our most recent rendition of this conversation, our Office Manager, Jennifer, told me a story about her 13th birthday. Her mother had always told her she could start wearing makeup when she turned 13, so on that big day they went to the local department store, where the woman at the makeup counter taught her how to apply makeup. This was a great move on mom’s part, but the makeup professional made one key mistake with the young Jennifer: she told her how to put the makeup ON, but never told her how to take it OFF.
At Seaside Aesthetics, we find that this gap in knowledge is common. So many women of all ages just don’t know how to remove their makeup, and how to correctly wash their face. So here we are to save the day! Our very own esthetician Patty is here to give you the scoop with her tip of the month! Here it is: How to Wash Your Face.
Step One: Take Off Your Makeup Lazy Bones!
This is the key step that many people skip. Even if you’re not wearing makeup, you should follow these instructions to remove your moisturizer or sunscreen. This is so important, because night time is when your growth hormones repair and rest. We want the skin to breathe at night, and when you leave makeup on, it can oxidize and cause free radicals to form and clog pores. Residual makeup on the skin also prevents your other products from working.
Patty recommends using the Milky Cleanser by Epionce, our skin care line at Seaside Aesthetics. However, she also recommends Cetaphil’s Gentle Skin Cleanser to remove makeup, and Pond’s Classic Cold Cream to remove eye makeup. When using any of these products, massage lightly onto dry face (that’s right, no water yet!), and tissue off with a soft tissue. Always tissue off gently and in an upward motion. The Milky Cleanser can also be used to remove eye makeup.
Step Two: Cleanse Skin to Kill Bacteria
After removing your makeup, Patty recommends using Epionce’s Lytic Cleanser, Gentle Foaming Cleanser, or Milky Cleanser, depending on your skin type. Massage the cleanser with water gently into the skin, and then pat dry with a clean towel. It is very important to cleanse the skin to kill bacteria. If you skip this step (I’m looking at you sleepy head…) you’re creating an overnight hot tub of bacteria. That means breakouts. If you already have blemish prone skin, these breakouts will be even worse.
Step Three: Toner
For toner, we love the Epionce Balancing Toner or Epionce Purifying Toner. Using a toner is necessary and simple. Spray the toner on a cotton pad, and simply apply over your face and neck. Not only does this remove any residual makeup or dirt, the toner also soothes the skin and prepares it to accept your treatment and moisturizing products.
Step Four: Treatment
After toner, you can apply any treatment products you’ve incorporated into your skin regimen. Epionce has many wonderful treatment options, from the anti-aging Intense Defense Serum to Lytic treatments that control blemishes. As explained on www.epionce.com, Epionce is “a physician-strength skin care line created by clinical dermatologist, Dr. Carl Thornfeldt. Epionce is rooted in hard science and integrates over 20 years of clinical skin research.” We are so proud to supply our patients with these wonderful skin care products, and will analyze your skin and tell you which products will best achieve the most beautiful skin of your life!
Step Five: Moisturize
Once your skin is fully cleansed, it is time for your moisturizer! I know that by now you’re not going to be surprised, but we recommend Epionce’s Renewal Cream or Renewal Lotion. The Renewal Eye Cream is also excellent for hydrating and renewing the skin around your eyes. During the day, don’t forget to then apply sunscreen!
In closing, I give you what Patty always says: KISS, or Keep It Simple Sleepyhead! Just remember these four steps, and do them every night, no matter how tired you are (or how many glasses of wine you’ve had)!
